In addition to finding and excising from your clip a single example of a sound you don't want to hear, Audition will also scan the entire clip and delete (or at least minimize) any other instances it detects. Naturally, Audition CC has the same benefits of the other CC apps, including online storage and membership in the portfolio service Behance.
A good audio editor will give you all the tools for both sound editingвЂ' re-arranging tracks, cleaning up background noise, smoothing out tonesвЂ'as well as music creation. If you need to enhance or create audio tracks for use in a video, look for editors from the likes of Sony or Adobe that are tightly integrated with video editing software.
To enhance the functionality of your software, many editors support Virtual Studio Technology (VST) plug-ins. There's a library of royalty-free sound effects, loops and music beds at Adobe's ResourceCentral.
If you want others to sing along you can create karaoke tracks from audio files using a vocal eraser tool, which, as you can guess, purges the vocals from a song while keeping the supporting music in tact. The software also features a pair of plug-ins for piano and guitar sounds to mimic the effect of a VST piano or a guitar played through a (virtual) stack of Marshall amps. NCH WavePad: This editor lets you slice and dice your audio files as well as add effects such as reverb, echo, reverse, and amplify. Soundbooth won't be released until early next year, but when it does hit, it could finally be the basic entry-level audio editor for which Mac and Windows users have been looking. Acquisitions are often bad omens for software products, but in the case of Adobe purchasing Cool Edit Pro and transforming it into Audition, good things have been happening. Some audio tools require you to open up a dialog box just to adjust a fade curve; Soundbooth lets you drag, which is a lot more logical. Where things get interesting is the way in which Soundbooth could do things other audio editors don't. Adobe also has an opportunity to focus on the way people actually use audio apps, including recording.
Soundbooth isn't going to take much away from the far more powerful tools in Audition, which can do end-to-end production, integrate with Premiere, and produce CDs and multitrack and surround work. It's a really nice UI and I agree that Audtion is pretty much the sound editor of choice. I would give my left arm for a Mac version of Sound Forge, the mother of all professional audio editors. I actually like the current version of Audition better than Sound Forge, just because of its extra capabilities, but I agree — both great editors. Compare, for instance, Adobe Labs' Flash 9 Player, which is feature complete and already quite solid and reliable, and even suggested for use in serious work even given its beta status. Cool Edit was one of the best sound programs of it time and now is Audition 2.0 and thats probably the best of its time.
Whether you need a soundtrack for your film, you're a DJ and need to polish up your sets before sharing them, or you're a musician looking to produce the next big club hit, you need a good audio editor to eliminate noise, convert your files, edit tracks, and output the whole thing.

Formerly Cool Edit Pro, Adobe Audition is a powerful suite that makes audio editing, splicing, remixing, and restoration easy. Most editors let you connect instruments and microphones directly into your PC (or Mac) soundcard to record the real-time audio. If you just need to tune up your own recordings or digitize and clean up an analog collection, a standalone audio editor should suffice.
Using Audio Editor you can cut, trim, mix and delete audio files using a timeline interface.
It offers a customizable interface, real-time input monitoring, a library of effects that can be added to your tracks, and 'roundtrip editing' that lets you move audio clips from Adobe's vide editor (Premiere) into Audition for fine-tuning and then back to Premiere for use in a video. It can record live audio - just plug your instruments or microphone into your PC's sound card and jam away. If you're sitting on some old vinyl or cassette tapes you can import those as well and use the software to help clean those up. The software offers a customizable interface, so you can dock various windows together to suite your needs. The software supports multiple sample rates, from between 6 to 196kHZ in either stereo or mono.
Other apps have had spectral views, but it's the editing tools in this view that stand out.
I don't yet see tools for cross-fading when you make cuts, or other slicing and editing tools.
But if these features are a glimpse of the next upgrade of Audition, both apps are headed in a good direction.
Integrated audio editors are never that great, but bundling Soundtrack should be a no brainer. It would also be nice if all those people who *might* pay for this app instead paid 50% of that to Audacity and thus helped get that application up to the standards you all would like it get to. Some of the interapp audio capabilities are already built into the architecture in Windows and just await an application hooking into them. This week, we're going to look at five of the best audio editing applications, based on your nominations. To see which audio editing tool was your favorite, head over to this week's Hive Five Followup post to see and discuss the winner! It's no DAW, but if you're a DJ looking to polish a set before sharing it with the web, or if you just want to remove the noise from your music collection or normalize the volume, Audacity is a simple tool to master and gets the job done quickly.
Adobe has nailed the consistency and, for me at least, the interface is very usable and attractive.
The fade and amplify controls in editing are the real draw, though: drag on audio to amplify it, with a live preview of the waveform and numeric amplify readout. Adobe could make these as intuitive as they made the fade in and fade out features, and this functionality would be useful to everyone, not just pros. In other words, you have a terrific free audio tool you can use until the beta expires early next year. It supports a number of different file types, including mp3, OGG, WAV, AIFF, and more, and can even record live audio for editing and export later.
It can record audio from a variety of inputs and can export your finished track in a variety of digital file formats including MP3, WAV, WMA and AAC, among others. Trust me, Adobe: the zillion users of Skype, people doing software training, and anyone who wants to capture app audio will thank you. At the very least, Soundbooth should fill a gap in the market for a basic, cross-platform audio editor, especially if Adobe prices it aggressively upon release.
With JACK, *any* Mac or Windows app can exchange audio data in any configuration with any other Mac or Windows app (assuming the apps don't abuse the CoreAudio or ASIO spec).
If you're not sure of the difference, audio editors let you manage and splice existing audio files, while DAWs are more for creating new music from scratch. Plus, Audacity's flexible features make it perfect for home projects like basement mixes and digitizing old cassettes or vinyl.
Audition makes it easy to mix, splice, and edit files you already have, and can support just about anything you throw at it.
If you want to edit existing files you may have a hard time getting around Ableton's features, but it does support virtually any type of audio you try to import, features pre-loaded effects and processing tools, a host of built-in instruments, and more.
And Soundbooth would benefit from more presets, especially for features like the compressor, which regularly baffle the beginner Adobe is trying to court. They have an opportunity to correct the mistakes Apple made with Soundtrack, namely, release a great audio tool, fail to evangelize it as such, then discontinue the standalone version in favor of a bundle with a video product. You can use the tool's built-in effects to add flair to your recordings, set up your frequent changes in an action and batch process dozens of audio files with the same settings, mix multiple tracks, and more. This feature alone should make Soundbooth a must-download if you don't already have Audition. I just hope Adobe spends time on those features and not on dumping a lot of useless automatic music generation content into Soundbooth instead. If Adobe would just add a paint on feature as in the graphical Mac-only sound app MetaSynth, I'd be in heaven.
